We’re calling on the House of Commons to study anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate.
Hatemail. Death threats. Online harassment. Physical violence. Parents worried for their children's safety. We can all feel the climate shifting - Canada is become less safe, less free and less equal for our 2SLGBTQIA+ friends, family members and neighbours.
In the face of rising hate, we must remind ourselves: A better Canada is possible - for rainbow communities, women, workers, racialized people, and everyone in Canada. Across our diverse identities, we all deserve the freedom to be ourselves, to be treated with dignity, and safe in our communities.
Canada is at its best when we uphold the humanity and dignity of our neighbours, even if their lives and their families look different from our own. Hate and discrimination towards one community impacts all communities. That’s why it’s so important that Canadian politicians work together to uphold human rights and acceptance of diversity.
Hate-motivated violence targeting queer people has risen every year for 3 years. Even federal intelligence organizations have issued a warning about the threat of extremist violence from the anti-LGBT movement. Misinformation and disinformation, paired with outright lies about 2SLGBTQIA+ people, are making life harder for queer and trans people. But together, we can turn the tide and get back to building a better Canada - for everyone.
Two Spirit, trans and queer people, and our families, should not have to live in fear of violence or hatred.
That’s why we are calling on the House of Commons - specifically the Standing Committee on the Status of Women - to conduct a study on anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate, invite witness testimony, and develop recommendations to address this critical issue.
