Transgender people are our neighbours, friends, and family. Like all Canadians, trans people are just trying to live their lives, pay their bills and support their families. Like all Canadians, transgender people deserve the freedom to be themselves, safe in their communities and afforded human rights.

On February 21st, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre voiced his support for banning transgender women from women’s shelters, washrooms, and sports. Such a ban would force transgender women out of public life and into homelessness.

Transgender women are women. They are also more likely to live in poverty, to experience homelessness, and to be survivors of sexual violence. Banning trans women from women’s spaces will exacerbate the inequality of transgender women, resulting in more violence and more discrimination.

By supporting a ban on transgender women in women’s spaces, Pierre Poilievre is punching down on an already vulnerable community.

We call on Pierre Poilievre to say no to transphobia, retract his dangerous comments and affirm that a Conservative government would respect the rights and equality of transgender women and all 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
