Right now, hate targeting our queer and trans neighbours is on the rise. Many queer and trans people are scared, as we see Canada becoming less free, less equal and less safe for our community. Here’s what’s going on:

• Police-reported hate-motivated violence towards queer and trans people increased by 69% in 2023, rising for the third consecutive year, as part of a staggering increase of 388% from 2016-2023.
  
• Queer and trans human rights advocates are being targeted with death threats, hate speech and harassment by anti-LGBTQ+ groups in big cities and small towns across Canada.
  
• Public acceptance of queer and trans people is declining, with less Canadians supportive of queer and trans people being open about their sexual orientation or gender identity in 2023 compared to 2021.
  
• Two Canadian provinces, Saskatchewan and Alberta, have overridden the charter-protected rights and freedom of transgender young people and their families.

Many of us are worried about where we’re headed, that Canada is going to become more scary for queer and trans people, but here’s the thing: It doesn’t have to be this way. 

Together, we can build a movement for freedom and rainbow equality. We can choose hope and unity, over fear and division. That’s the Canada we deserve.
