Resources for organizations

The queer community is under attack. Power-hungry politicians and anti-2SLGBTQIA+ groups are using misinformation and fear to roll back the freedom, equality and human rights of queer and trans people. If they succeed, Canada will be less free, less equal and less safe. That’s why we’ve created Drag the Vote (www.dragthevote.ca) - a national campaign powered by over 150 drag artists across Canada.

This nonpartisan campaign is our call to action - for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, allies, and anyone who believes in equality, freedom and human rights - to get involved, to show up to vote, and to support candidates they believe in.

Drag the Vote is one of 2 election-related campaigns powered by Queer Momentum. Drag the Vote is focused on Getting Out the Vote. Our second campaign, Vote Rainbow Equality, is focused on engaging the broader public on 2SLGBTQIA+ issues, freedom, equality and human rights. Further information about Vote Rainbow Equality is accessible here.

Purpose of this guide: To support 2SLGBTQIA+ and allied organizations to participate in and amplify the Drag the Vote campaign. This guide includes campaign key messaging, digital assets for social media, and related information.

Example 1: We’re teaming up with @QueerMomentum to DRAG THE VOTE. With hate rising and a federal election around the corner, we’re speaking up for equality, freedom and human rights. Will you speak up with us? Together, we can vote for a better future. For queer people. For everyone. Join the movement: www.dragthevote.ca

Example 2: Queer people are under attack. Our freedom, culture, establishments, legal recognition and human rights, they're all under attack. That's why we’re sounding the alarm - and taking action.

Alongside Queer Momentum and drag performers across Canada, we’re going to Drag the Vote. We’re building a movement of everyday people who believe in freedom, equality and human rights. Together, we will make our voices heard in the 2025 federal election.

Instructions:

  1. Find a quiet place, indoors or outdoors, where you can film a short video without being interrupted. Make sure the space is bright / well lit.
  2. Review the scripts below, choose one for your video, or create your own. You're welcome to edit ours to suit you.
  3. Think about your tone: we like fiery (!!!) but we also want to be hopeful, to bring a message that touches hearts AND minds.
  4. Record your video. Do a couple takes if helpful, and don't worry if you stumble over a word. Do a test run first to make sure the audio and video quality are good. Pro tip: ask a friend to help.
  5. Post the video on your social media channels, with a caption tagging us (@queermomentum) and encouraging people to visit www.dragthevote.ca. We've included some example captions at the end of this document.
  • Key Message #1: Across Canada, anti-LGBTQ+ hate is on the rise, making life harder, less free and less safe for queer and trans people.

  • Key Message #2: To uphold freedom, equality and human rights, we need queer people and our allies to show up and vote. To help elect progressive members of parliament who will support our community.

  • Key Message #3: That’s why I’m asking you to visit www.dragthevote.ca to pledge to vote and find other ways you can take action for human rights and rainbow equality. If we want to maintain progress, we’ve all got to do our part.

Script 1: Across Canada, queer and trans communities are under attack. With a federal election around the corner, now is our time to speak up and show up for our queer neighbours. If we want to uphold freedom, maintain progress, we’ve got to tap in. All you gotta do is visit www.dragthevote.ca to join our movement.

Script 3: There’s a federal election around the corner, and it’s happening even as hate targeting our queer and trans neighbours grows.
