Earlier this month, the Society of Queer Momentum submitted a brief to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance to share our recommendations to the Government of Canada for the next federal budget.
While we applaud the efforts of the federal government to advance 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, health and safety over the past decade, we urge greater leadership and investment as we witness a staggering rise in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate exacerbating long-standing inequities faced by our communities.
We recommended the federal government invest $20 million in a new grant program to address anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate and to host a National Summit on Third Party Violence. We also recommended the government invest $5 million to appoint a Special Representative and create an Office focused on addressing rising 2SLGBTQIA+ hate.
We also amplified recommendations from our sibling 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations. We encouraged the federal government to:
- Establish a $200 million Philanthropic Endowment Fund for 2SLGBTQI+ Communities, as recommended by the Enchanté Network
- Support the budget request by the Dignity Network Canada to enhance support for 2SLGBTQIA+ human rights in Canada’s international assistance to $20M a year (roughly 0.3% of total international assistance).

The fundraising committee, which includes representatives from Queer Momentum’s staff team and board of directors, works to develop, guide and implement fundraising strategies with a focus on individual donor engagement and growth.
