In light of the new and more dangerous conditions created by American President Donald Trump's anti-trans executive orders, we, the undersigned, recognize that the United States is no longer a "safe third country", and call on the Government of Canada to update travel guidance to the United States and create a clear and accessible pathway for trans refugees from around the world to escape anti-queer countries and become part of Canada's strong and diverse cultural mosaic.
The Trump administration's new executive orders have, among other things, ensured that the United States is suddenly much less safe for trans and queer people, immigrants, and refugees. Canada has an opportunity to provide global leadership and safe haven for trans and queer refugees fleeing unsafe countries, particularly those who might otherwise have chosen to escape to the US and no longer feel safe to do so.
Canada has a long history of global leadership on LGBTQI+ issues, inclusive of supporting queer and trans people fleeing contexts of criminalization and violence. As America pulls back its support, Canada has a moral obligation to step up.
