Thanks to generous support provided by the Equality for Sex, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression Program (SSOGIE) at Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE), Momentum launched the Accelerating 2SLGBTQIA+ Advocacy Project in January of 2024. This 27-month project aims to build Momentum’s capacity and accelerate advocacy coherence across the 2SLGBTQIA+ and allied sectors in response to rising hate. We’ve been working on strategic planning, growing our team, and expanding our advocacy network.
Project activities have included establishing and maintaining a national 2SLGBTQIA+ Advocacy Advisory Council, Feminist-2SLGBTQIA+ Advocacy Advisory Working Group, and Youth-2SLGBTQIA+ Advocacy Advisory Working Groups. These three groups act as coalition-building mechanisms, enabling 2SLGBTQIA+, Feminist, and Youth-Serving organizations to collaborate on advocacy efforts and materials in response to the rise in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate.
We have been hard at work with our Rural, Remote, and Northern Queer Advocacy Leadership program, where we have had the chance to dive deep into essential skills for emerging organizers. Our journey has been about building meaningful relationships and sharing knowledge that truly makes a difference in our communities.
We’ve tackled Media Training for Queer Advocates with Kathryn LeBlanc, sharpening our voices and learning how to navigate the media landscape effectively. Fae Johnstone led us through the ins and outs of effective campaigning, equipping us with tools to advocate powerfully. And with Shelly-Ann, we explored amplifying the voices of Black, Indigenous, and folks of colour—a crucial area where we learned a lot, even stumbling at times, but always growing.
Our goal is to create a network of skilled organizers ready to make an impact in rural, remote, and northern communities. We’re here to learn, share, and build the kind of relationships that will support a better world.
