Coming out as transgender is a scary moment for many young people, and for their families
Many youth will come out to their friends and school community before they're ready to come out at home, because they need space to explore who they are. The Premier’s legislation took away their agency, and made it more difficult for schools to support these youth and their families.
The overwhelming majority of parents support their kids, and would continue to support their kids if they came out as trans
That's not what this is about. It's about autonomy for young people to explore who they are, and empowering schools to work with parents and youth in the rare scenario when a young person isn't safe to come out at home. Being a teen is hard enough as is. It's already harder for many trans youth than for their peers. Now, the Premier has made it harder.
What if instead of forcing a false choice between parent rights and trans rights, we recognized the importance of autonomy for all young people AND the integral role of parents?
When, in the Fall of 2023, a judge granted an injunction to pause the implementation of Premier Moe’s anti-trans policies, citing the risk of “irreparable harm to vulnerable children”, the Premier suspended the Charter-protected rights of transgender young people to get around the injunction.
