Media Release: 10,000+ Canadians Urge the Government of Canada to act for #TransEqualityNow.

While right-wing politicians continue to scapegoat the LGBTQ+ community for political gain, the Society of Queer Momentum keeps demonstrating that Canadians support their LGBTQ+ neighbours, co-workers, friends, and family. More than 10,000 Canadians signed Momentum’s petition on trans rights.

“As hate rises, transgender Canadians need leadership from the Government of Canada. We’ve come a long way in the past decade, but more is needed to advance fulsome equality for trans and gender diverse people” said Fae Johnstone, Executive Director of Queer Momentum “It is time the Government of Canada delivers on their promise to transgender Canadians and take real steps towards our equality. Because all Canadians deserve to be free, safe and equal.”

The official House of Commons petition was launched on November 8, in the lead up to the Trans Day of Remembrance (November 20).  Momentum launched the petition, sponsored by Randall Garrison, MP for Esquimalt—Saanich—Sooke, calling on the federal government to implement the White Paper on the Status of Trans and Gender Diverse People. Because the petition has secured sufficient support, the federal government will be required to respond in writing to this call for action.

“Working together with the trans community, we’ve made progress in moving trans rights forward, but we still have much more work to do. We’ve laid out concrete policy solutions to improve the lives of trans and gender diverse people in Canada.” said Garrison. “The government needs to act now to ensure equality of rights means equality in practice.”

“With the rise of anti-trans hate and violence, It is critical that our government promptly takes action to protect Trans Canadian lives.” said Jenica Atwin, Liberal Member of Parliament for Fredericton, New Brunswick. “As the MP for one of the most gender-diverse ridings in Canada, I strongly urge our government to implement the policies proposed by this white paper.”

The Society of Queer Momentum was founded in 2023 to organize against rising anti-queer and anti-trans hatred, and accelerate social justice for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
